So the first issue of the new Batgirl series came out and I've read it. It was an alright start. By far not the best thing I've read this month, but it was still pretty entertaining.
S P O I L E R
I never liked Cassandra Caine that much, so I'm glad that somebody else is Batgirl now. And I think that Stephanie Brown might work out pretty well, especially since it looks like they are going with Barbara Gordon/Oracle as a mentor for her. The narrative suggests that this will not only be a Stephanie Brown book, but also a Barbara Gordon book, which is a very cool thing. I for one just didn't like the "perfect killer machine Cassandra Caine that pretty much had no personality and outside life". It was just not interesting to read about her. But as much as I didn't care about Cassandra, I think that there should still be more explaining done why she just gave the mantle to Stephanie.

Steph is pretty fail as Batgirl. The comments that Batman and Robin make about her appear that she is gonna get the beat down by someone. Also in the first issue she just gets by without killing herself. It is a total opposite from the super ninja master batgirl.

That's probably why I liked it. It's about a young girl that still has to learn a lot and is nowhere near perfect yet. I don't know if she's a fail just yet. But I guess she will make some mistakes and get beaten every once in a while. Why not? She's not that experienced yet.

she was once robin for a few weeks and that should make her pretty good. hell the new question trained with richard dragon for like a week and she is super uber crazy fighter chick now. Also Steph has been spoiler for a while and I dont remember her being that bad at crime fighting...well there was the entire war games story...

Don't forget that the new Question had far more training behind her than just the one week with Richard Dragon. She was a police officer (and an adult woman on top of that) that went through some martial arts training before that already. Spoiler wasn't Robin for very long. She wasn't that bad at crimefighting either. She just wasn't as perfect as Cassandra Caine yet which Dick Grayson immediately realized. He was probably the one who send Barbara over to her place anyway. Bruce actually never thought that Steph was really ready to fight crime. That's why he fired her as Robin.

Bruce actually never thought that Steph was really ready to fight crime. That's why he fired her as Robin. Not it's not... it was because she ignored a direct order (to stay out of the subways when Zsasz was prowling) and went for a kill-blow that would have put Zsasz down for good if his nose wasn't already broken. One of my favourite issues of a title, I'll have to find the exact number. I think that's one of the given reasons, at least. Not because "she wasn't ready", but because she broke his rules.

She wasn't ready to not break his rules.

I'm on the fence with Steph as Batgirl. I loved Cassandra, but so much damaged(via bad writing) had been done to the character it was time for something else. DC promises something with her soon, so hopefully it brings something back to the character. If they are going to do a "Babs mentors Steph" type of thing as hinted on in issue #2, I'd be ok with that. If thats the case, I can't wait to see the boys' reactions.
If Damian gets a crush on Steph would be a good plot point to keep the Tim/Damian feud going.
