Perhaps because of habit, or perhaps because of my devastating insomnia as of late, I decided to take another look at the Wingnuts Forum and I found myself fascinated by a particular section of the forum that I never bothered looking at before. This is a section we do not have here on these forums and that to be honest, I rarely take the content of this section into consideration when I post so on others so I thought I would take that bit and just copy it here for any of you out there like me who similarly don't care when registering for message boards. I will provide commentary in italics below.
I think you know where I am going with this...
Nightwing Forum Rules
Oh yeah!
The Wing Nuts Forum is a great place for us to share our interest in Nightwing. We want you to have fun, however, as in most forums we expect you to abide by certain rules so that this place can run smoothly. We are not very strict, so don't run away just yet.
Okay writer of these rules, luckily it's not that I ran away so much as was kicked out after complying to a warning I was given.
There will be no flaming allowed here, or use of Offensive language towards others.
Also, fuck grammar.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions and they should be respected. The person will receive a warning for each time flaming occurs. - Flaming is worth 2 points each. - If the persons warning is at 100%, they will be banned.
Ooh! Ooh! I have a question! Is a point considered a percentage point? Perhaps, before we get carried away assigning certain penalties point values, we should define what the point is actually worth. If this is the case, one can flame exactly fifty times before being banned. I can only assume that with each of these counts of flaming, there should also be evidence of flaming that fit into a standard definition of what flaming is... and that that definition should be provided to people beforehand that way they can avoid committing such an act. Right? I eagerly await the part of these rules where I will be given this information... I actually have butterflies in my stomach.
Flaming towards an Administrator is Automatic ban.
Right on. God forbid anyone talk shit to administrator! I, as an administrator, hates being flamed. It's hot enough out here in California as it is I don't need your bullshit, all of you. If I insult you, you had all better sit there and take it because I am clearly better than you in that I have a title... remember? The whole administrator thing...
We created these forums for you, if you didn't have us, you'd probably be floating around wishing for a Nightwing Forum.
You got it! I am a floater right now wishing for such a thing, hoping that one day my wish will be fulfilled by a higher authority who can manipulate reality and make such a Forum exist! Because nothing right now is more appetizing than joining a message board dedicated to a comic book title that is no longer being published! My favorite thing about this statement is that there is so much arrogance behind these statements, right? They so consider themselves the only outlet for talking about Nightwing as if the character is so massively popular that thousands flock there on a daily basis and they don't have to go around begging and pleading for new members to join to the point where certain people are banned from other message boards for looking like spammers.
Please keep spamming to a minimum.
Irony!
Certain things are allowed, but too much spamming can be annoying. If you are overdoing it, we will verbally warn you, continue and we will have to add a warning on your warning bar. -Each continuous spamming is worth 2 points. Again, if you reach 100%, you are banned.
Again, there is no real definition of what spamming is so much as there is a threat against with equally ambiguous punishment. Sounds like if you do something we will give you these things and if you accumulate so many, you are out!. Not that it's not a sophisticated system, but as a banned member of this forum, I've never seen such this structure in play at all. I've not seen ANY structure whatsoever. That's the beauty of this forum. I don't have to worry about this sort of thing.
Multiple accounts also result in an instant ban.
Oooh, INSTANT BAN!!! Scary.
We have to keep track of all IP addresses, don't try to screw us over.
This is such an easy thing to avoid. I almost feel like creating a new, fake account just to circumvent their bullshit IP address tracking system. Just because I can. I don't need TRY try to screw them over, there are at least 10 different ways I can get around this one if I felt like it off the top of my head, haha.
In fact...
For all they know, I'm already registered as one of their new posters that hasn't been all that active. I'm not saying that's true. I'm saying it's a very possible reality.
Harrassment
What about it?
Not allowed, results in automatic ban. Harrassment is anyone who continiously annoys another person, either through PM, AIM, whatever. If someone is harrassing you, please inform us and we will take action immediately.
Harrasment? That's so vague. And so misspelled. Anyhow, I guess if I was continiously[sic] harrassing[sic] someone through PM, AIM, and of course, whatever. Whereas I've talked to a great many of people on AIM, MSN, and the Wingnuts chat room (it's where I met some of the posters here and became good friends with them) I don't THINK this has ever been in a harassing manner. Now, if such a think did occur, there are ways to avoid it by just blocking the person oneself. I don't know how long ago this thing was written, but certainly by that point, there was a feature on chat clients to simply ignore certain users or mark their emails as SPAM.
My point is that this rule really caters to people that can't deal with people and probably shouldn't be on the internet if they can't deal with people by simply choosing to ignore them, right? If I was such a callow poster that I can't deal with the person in a more straight forward manner than running to an authority, I would consider myself a pussy.
No Pornography Allowed - Worth 8 points each time.
Oh nos! Not EIGHT WHOLE POINTS! That means I can only do it how many more times before getting banned? Again, assuming one point translates to one percentage point, only 12.5 more times before I get banned!
This is a family friendly site, we don't need that here.
I'm going to assume, two shirtless dude's kissing is pornography based on my getting banned for it. I think a lot of people have different standards for pornography and this is another gray blurry area but as I've been reprimanded for just this very thing, I have a unique perspective in defining this for them. Again, this is just an assumption, but because I know what y(an example of pornography) is, i can therefore define x(pornography)...
So that picture of Nightwing and Batman (exchanging a loving embrace after an epic fight where they removed their shirts a la, most Ra's Al Ghul stories including Batman) is equal to...
Let it be known, that whereas my picture was pretty sexual in nature, it's primary purpose was not to cause sexual arousal. It was meant to be over the top and stupid and in the context of where it was posted, it certainly was to be treated as a joke and never meant to be taken seriously. However, this is in the eyes of the beholder, and if the person who looked at it got a little tight in the pants, that's beyond my control. I can't help the feelings one has when they laid eyes upon the image. Most people I know laughed about it because they saw what I was doing. They saw that I was doing, a really tacky picture of two commonly linked comic book characters that really deviant members of the comic book community go nuts over. Ah well... I guess some people thought it was super hot.
Plagerism - Instant Ban.
On the priority list of this site, Pornography falls below “Plagerism” in that “Plagerism” warrants an instant ban and Pornography does not. Ha. Family friendly indeed. If I were a parent, I'd rather my child look at graphic violent pornography than you know... a thesis paper that was copied from the internet.
Plagerism is any one that copies someone else's work and claims it as their own. It's not allowed here and as a matter of fact it's illegal, so prevent yourself from getting arrested.
My favorite because such an act does not even exist. Perhaps if the writer of these rules plagiarized the forum rules of another site they would not be so fucking stupid. I mean, really, if you are going to create a list of rules that you expect every member of your community to follow, don't you think you should at least spell check it? What does that say about someone's intelligence that they don't know how to spell the word "plagiarism to begin with?"
Swearing - Editing by Admin or Mod
Harshest punishment of all.
We're trying to make ourselves a PG forum for the younger generation and their parents/guardians. Lets try to keep the swearing to a minimum
Oh guess what, fuck this rule. It's a piece of shit. As a part of the younger generation, I would have thought this rule was senseless and overly conservative especially when you consider that the people that read Nightwing are exposed to a lot worse in comics than a couple four letter words. Let's be honest, who is being protected by a swearing ban? How many members of that site are younger than 14? How many are younger than 16? How many of those kids don't already use much harsher language? Just fucking stupid to censor a select few words.
That's it so far. Please follow the rules, and remember we are just here to have fun.
Uh huh. That's it so far. I think they should have placed a No Dissent rule in there as well. Also, being associated with someone who partakes in the art of Dissent is clearly off limits. Perhaps a rule that says to be a member of his forum, you must comply to the administrator's own personal mission statement that is defined... oh yeah, no where on the site. That was the whole issue a few of us took with the site in the first place. That it trumps up this certain claim of having direction when none is given. Ever. Even when asked.
Italics off. I'm done mocking their beloved rules.
Now, here's the thing, I know that Will is a busy, busy man and he doesn't need my constant "harrassment" but I think it's been a few days since the whole thing happened so screw it, let's discuss this again if just to iron some things about my abrupt departure. Maybe someone here who is still able to post at the other board would be interested in sending him a link to this post so that he can take a look at the things I've said and reassess the way he deals with people. I'm not trying to get reinstated there because by this point, it's blatantly obvious that Will and I will not get along which entirely on his end because as I had reiterated time and time again, I have no problem with Will. I have a problem with his views for sure but he as a person I have found in the past to be generally understanding if not a little temperamental. Contrary to his persistent characterization of me, I've not been the one behaving like a child, and if he wants to discuss the situation with me, I'd love the opportunity. I don't see that happening because as he's shown in the past, he is the type of person to shut down and shut people out.
The point of talking with him here? I think an open dialogue is the best way to handle situations. If nothing else, we can provide a little finality on the situation that is better than “you posted a picture of two gays, goodbye.” I've known Will for years, I'm the fifth (nearly fourth) most active poster on his message board and to think it would end over something so juvenile disgusts me. But the ball is in his court. Oh, well and your guys' as you'd have to direct him here to read this of course. Who doesn't want to take place in something like THAT? Haha.
And hey...
If nothing else, Will might be interested to see another way he can improve upon his community by updating the rules he intends to keep enforcing so sternly. I know that Will just graduated law school and if I were him, I'd be embarrassed by the truly pathetic list of rules he lists on his site that he spends so much time and effort keeping afloat.
I think you know where I am going with this...
